Sengkang Secondary School Band

If anyone were to ask us whether we would turn back time and relive our entire band journey from day one, we’d say yes without even having to think twice. Being the Band leaders of SKY band has taught us countless valuable life lessons and has truly shaped us into a better version of ourselves.

Through this role, we’ve come to understand that leadership isn’t just about being strict or trying to be the perfect role models. It’s about building a space where everyone feels safe to grow, where music is not only practiced but enjoyed, and where real connections are formed. Band has taught us the importance of passion, teamwork, and enjoying the process – not just striving for perfection.

Our band leader journey has been an emotional roller coaster. There were definitely tough moments—we made mistakes, doubted ourselves, and faced challenges we never anticipated. But with the constant support of our conductor, Ms. Tan, and our teacher, Ms. Loh, we were able to rise above those struggles. They guided us with unwavering patience and helped us become more confident and resilient. Alongside all the tough times were also beautiful memories: the long hours of practices, shared laughter at band camps, and the joy of seeing everything come together during performances. Every experience, big or small, helped shape who we are today.

One of the most defining parts of our band journey was preparing for SYF 2025. In the beginning, progress was slow. Many of us struggled with our parts, and the fear of making mistakes kept us from playing confidently. The constant corrections started to weigh heavily on our morale, and for a while, it felt like we were stuck. Some members began to lose motivation.

But it was during this low point that something shifted. One day, we decided as a band to pause and talk—not just about music, but about why we were doing this. That conversation reminded us of our shared goal: to give our best, to grow, and to create something we could all be proud of. That moment marked a turning point.

With the renewed energy and constant encouragement from our teachers, we began to rebuild our confidence and trust in one another. With the constant encouragement and guidance from our teachers, slowly but surely, things started to change and the band began to push through.Though doubt still lingered—“Why is it like this?” “What if we mess up?”—we pushed forward. Practices became more focused, and we began to see real progress. Discipline and time management became crucial as we juggled school and band, but the growth we experienced made every sacrifice worth it.

When we finally played our pieces to the best of our abilities, even though it wasn’t perfect, we all felt a little sense of pride. The moments we nearly gave up, made all the long hours of practice even more meaningful. Through it all, we learned that perseverance, faith in one another, and consistent effort truly do pay off.

SYF 2025 has become a defining moment of our secondary school life. It taught us that a band is so much more than music. It’s about connection, growth, and the strength found in unity. We saw how strangers can become family, how a single note from one instrument can harmonise with another, and how shared purpose can lead to something extraordinary.

That was when we realised that Band sessions were not just about preparing for a performance—it was about becoming better individuals and forming an unbreakable team. Many of us started off unsure and lacked the confidence, but we grew together. We pushed each other, supported one another during setbacks, and reminded ourselves constantly of our purpose. There were times when the stress of balancing academics and band felt overwhelming. Days when we questioned whether we’d ever get there. But those were the moments where we learned the true meaning of perseverance. We didn’t succeed overnight—it was through the small, consistent efforts we made every day. As the quote goes, “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” And that was exactly what brought us to where we are today.

When we finally stepped onto the SYF stage, we did so not just as a group of musicians, but as a family that had grown, struggled, and succeeded together. Our performance was more than music; it was a combination of hard work, resilience, and dedication. None of this would have been possible without the support of our teachers, especially Ms. Loh and Ms. Tan. for believing in us and guiding us through every high and low. Their dedication, patience, and care made all the difference, and for that, We are deeply grateful.

As we move forward, we carry the lessons and memories from this journey with us. The values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience will stay with us in whatever we choose to do. Most of all, the bonds we’ve built and the memories we’ve made will remain a treasured part of who we are.

This journey has been unforgettable and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
