Raqueno Zia Lorenzo and Khatijatul Kubra
Changkat Changi Secondary School Band

Raqueno Zia Lorenzo

Before upper secondary, I found band to be a challenging environment where it was hard to find motivation or excitement. It felt like there was little to look forward to, and as a group, we struggled to create the music we aimed for. At that point, Concert Band felt like just an after-school commitment without much meaning.

However, reflecting on our journey and seeing how far we’ve come, especially after our SYF results, my perspective on band and I believe that of my fellow band members has transformed completely. We’ve evolved from a group lacking direction into a close-knit family filled with determination and passion.

We started at a low point, but we had nowhere to go but up, and we embraced that challenge. Our journey to improvement was not easy, but through persistence and hard work, we grew into a vibrant and supportive community that I am incredibly proud to be a part of. The bond we share and the progress we’ve achieved together are truly remarkable.

This transformation would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our conductor and teachers, and most importantly, the dedication of each and every band member. Together, we have rewritten our story for the better, and every single one of us played a crucial role in making this happen.

As we awaited our results, I realized that no matter the outcome, whether it was Commendation, Accomplishment, or Distinction, it would never diminish the effort and heart we poured into this journey. While it might have been humbling to accept a result different from what we hoped for, we knew that our hard work and growth defined us, not the results. So, when the results were announced, we held our heads high and said, “We did that!” because we knew, deep down, that we gave it our all—and that is what truly matters.

What once seemed impossible has now become a reality. For the first time in three years, we achieved an Accomplishment at SYF. This milestone marks the beginning of what I believe will be even greater achievements in the future. I am incredibly grateful to have been part of this journey and this pivotal step toward positive change.

I’ve had the privilege of being part of the concert band for the past three years. As I look back on this journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude, pride, and a touch of bittersweet emotion as this chapter comes to a close.

When I first joined the band, we were not the strongest group. We faced challenges, and many of us lacked direction and motivation. Practices felt like routines rather than opportunities for growth, and staying in sync as a team, both musically and personally, was often difficult. But it is precisely these struggles that make our story so inspiring, because everything changed when we began to recognize something truly significant.

Over time, it became clear that despite coming from different backgrounds, classes, and skill levels, we all shared one common goal: the desire to improve. It wasn’t about being the best or winning accolades; it was about striving to do our best. This shift in perspective brought us closer together and gave our efforts meaning.

This year, in particular, has been incredibly special. Our band culture has undergone a complete transformation. The energy, dedication, and positivity that now define us as a team are light-years ahead of where we began. Band practices are no longer just obligations; they’ve become something we eagerly anticipate. Members arrive early to warm up, practice, and encourage one another, driven by a genuine love for music, growth, and each other.

What stands out to me the most is how much we’ve grown as both musicians and as a family. We celebrate each other’s successes, cheer one another on through challenging moments, and ensure that no one feels left behind. If someone struggles, there’s always a helping hand or a kind word of encouragement. Together, we’ve built a community founded on trust, teamwork, and perseverance.

Our efforts have been rewarded in ways that go beyond any single achievement. This year, we reached a milestone that reflects how far we’ve come, not just in skill but in resilience and commitment. Our success is a testament to the discipline, countless hours of practice, and the unwavering support we’ve shown one another. It’s proof that determination and teamwork can accomplish incredible things; things no trophy or award can ever fully encapsulate.

Leaving the band is not easy for me. It has been such a significant part of my school life, a place where I found confidence, formed lifelong friendships, and learned lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. I will miss everything, the laughter during breaks, the last-minute practice sessions, the pre-performance excitement, and most of all, the sense of belonging every time I played my instrument.

As I move on, I carry with me these treasured memories and valuable lessons. The band will forever hold a special place in my heart and remain a part of who I am.
