Clarinetist, Quest Band
This was my first and last SYF, and looking back, it has truly been one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. When I first joined band, I didn’t know what to expect from SYF as I had never participated in an SYF before. My seniors always talked about how intense it could be, but I don’t think anything could have fully prepared me for what the journey would actually feel like.
The preparation leading up to SYF was honestly not easy. We had long, tiring practices that sometimes felt endless, but we kept showing up. We kept pushing through because we believed that everything we were doing would eventually come together. Every small improvement, every correction, every repetition—it all added up. And even though it wasn’t always perfect, what mattered most was that we were growing, not just in how we played, but in how we worked together.
Through all that effort, I started to feel something shift. We weren’t just individuals learning our own parts. We were becoming a team. We were learning how to listen to each other, how to adjust, and how to blend. And during all these practices, I started to build real bonds with the people around me. We joked during breaks, supported each other when we were struggling, and celebrated the small wins together. Those friendships became one of the things that made the whole journey so special to me.
By the time we stepped on stage for the actual SYF performance, everything felt surreal. I still remember the silence right before we started playing, the way my heart was racing, and how suddenly everything we had worked for felt real. In that moment, it wasn’t just about the music. It was about the journey. It was about all the hours we spent together, all the challenges we overcame, and all the growth that happened along the way. I wasn’t just proud of how we sounded—I was proud of the dedication, the teamwork, and the resilience we had shown from the very beginning.
Being part of the QTSS SYF group taught me so much. I learned the importance of discipline and consistency. I realised that effort matters, even when it feels like no one is watching. I learned that pushing through difficult days is what makes the end result meaningful. It also showed me the power of teamwork—how much more we can accomplish when we support each other and stay focused on a shared goal.
Band has been such a big part of my life, and I’m really glad that this SYF experience has deepened that. I know I’ll still be in band moving forward, but I think this journey made me appreciate it even more. It reminded me how meaningful it is to be part of a group that works so hard toward something together. I’ve grown closer to so many people, and I’ve come to really value the friendships, the teamwork, and the shared passion we all have for music. I’m excited to keep growing with everyone and to see what else we can achieve together.
The things I’ve learned in band have gone beyond just music. I’ve learned how to manage my time, stay focused under pressure, and work hard even when things get tough. I’ve also learned to be more patient—with others and with myself. These lessons have helped me in school, in group projects, and in how I deal with challenges in daily life. Band taught me how to stay committed and how to keep going even when things don’t come easily at first.
And along this whole journey, Mr. Lim has always been here to guide us. He wasn’t just our conductor or our instructor, but also the best mentor. He didn’t just teach us how to play our instruments better; he taught us how to be better people. He reminded us to respect one another, to take responsibility, and to always give our best. His patience and dedication really stood out to me, especially during the tougher practices. Even when we were struggling or not performing our best, he never gave up on us. The way he believed in us made us want to do better—not just for him, but for each other. He made such a big difference in this journey, and I know the lessons he taught us will stay with me long after this.
Looking back now, SYF was more than just a performance. It was a journey that tested us, taught us, and brought us closer together. It was about pushing ourselves to the limit, learning from mistakes, and celebrating how far we had come. It made me realise that the most meaningful achievements are never just about the final outcome—they’re about the effort, the people, and the growth that happens along the way.
This SYF experience is one that I’ll always be thankful for and one that will stay with me for a long time.
