Meridian Secondary Symphonic Band

As I stand at the end of my second and final SYF journey, I can’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come. It has truly been a wild, emotional, and unforgettable ride. This year’s SYF was especially meaningful—not just because it marked the conclusion of my own journey, but because it symbolized a powerful transformation. I was no longer the junior quietly watching and learning from my seniors. Instead, I found myself becoming the one others looked to—guiding, mentoring, and doing my best to lead with both heart and purpose.

Being entrusted with the roles of both Band Major and Student Conductor was something I never expected when I first joined band as a timid, unsure Secondary 1 student. Back then, I could barely speak up, let alone lead. But over time, with every rehearsal, performance, and moment of struggle, I started to grow—not just as a musician, but as a person. These roles didn’t just teach me about responsibility and discipline; they pushed me beyond what I thought I could handle. They taught me to be brave, to carry the weight of expectations, and to stand strong even when I felt overwhelmed. There were moments I doubted myself, moments when the pressure got heavy—but every time, I reminded myself who I was doing it for: the band. My friends. My juniors. And the music.

One of the most unforgettable moments in our SYF preparation was the masterclass with Professor Surapol. Sitting in our rehearsal space—our auditorium—watching him dissect our performance and guide us with such clarity and passion was nothing short of inspiring. He challenged us to think differently, to dig deeper into the meaning behind the music, and to refine the smallest details. His advice, especially for our percussionists, made a huge impact—not only technically, but emotionally. I’m so grateful for the chance to have learned from him. It reminded me that music isn’t just about hitting the right notes—it’s about storytelling, connection, and heart. “Like a samurai!” he’d describe our choice piece, Dancing in the Wind.

Band didn’t just change my life inside school—it influenced who I am outside of it too. It gave me the confidence to step beyond my comfort zone and seek new opportunities. I found myself joining external events like Festival Winds in both 2023 and 2024, meeting other passionate musicians and learning from their experiences. I began exploring flute-specific events like the Autumn Flute Fair, where I connected more deeply with my instrument and met flutists who inspired me to dream bigger. I even joined a community band—something I could never have imagined myself doing when I was that quiet, stuttering boy in Secondary 1. Band gave me more than just skills. It gave me courage.

And that courage carried into my daily life. I’ve found myself becoming more vocal, more confident in expressing myself, whether in class discussions or casual conversations. Without band, I honestly believe I’d still be holding myself back—afraid to speak, afraid to be seen. Band taught me to embrace who I am, to take pride in my voice, whether it’s through music or words.

But what I’ll miss most are the simple, quiet moments—walking into the band room after a long, exhausting day of school, picking up my flute or piccolo, and letting the music wash everything away. Band was a sanctuary. It was where I felt the most free, the most myself. It became a second home—one filled with laughter, till-5:30 rehearsals, off-pitch notes, and the deep, unspoken bond shared between people who gave their hearts to the same rhythm.

I’m incredibly grateful to the people who have walked this journey with me. To my seniors who once guided me with patience and care—thank you for showing me what it meant to lead. To my juniors—thank you for trusting me and for reminding me every day why this band means so much. And to our teachers and conductors, Mr. Gabriel Song and Mr. Pan—thank you for never giving up on me. You believed in me not just as a musician, but as a growing person. Your support and encouragement lit the way forward when I couldn’t see it myself. I will never forget the lessons you’ve taught me, both in music and in life.

SYF 2025 wasn’t just a performance. It was the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and countless memories. It marked the end of a chapter—one filled with highs and lows, triumphs and setbacks, but most of all, heart. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I’m proud of who I’ve become because of this journey.

As I take my final bow, I do so with a full heart. Thank you, band—for the music, for the memories, and for changing my life in ways I never expected. Though my journey ends here, I know the rhythm of everything I’ve learned will continue to guide me, wherever I go. I hope to see both new and familiar faces after my exams when I come back to the band scene!
