A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Preparing for an anniversary concert is unlike any other performance. For Joanne Heng (Alumni, 2014) of Nanyang Symphonic Winds, this moment is deeply meaningful.
“It feels very meaningful to be preparing this anniversary concert and to reminisce on how far NTUSB has come along all these years.”
Current NTUSB Chairperson, Malcolm Tan, shares a similar sentiment, recognizing the extra dedication from members in rehearsing tirelessly for the event.
“It feels amazing preparing for this year’s Sojourn compared to past concerts. Everyone has been anticipating this concert and has been rehearsing tirelessly for its success!”
The 40th-anniversary celebration is not just about looking back but also about honouring the resilience and growth of NTUSB, especially in the wake of challenges like the pandemic.
A Place of Belonging
For many, NTUSB is more than just a band—it is a home. Joanne describes it as a place where she always feels welcomed.
“It feels like a place of belonging whenever we come back and see familiar faces, even climbing up the same old familiar hill.”
For Malcolm, NTUSB nurtures not just musicianship but also a strong sense of community.
“Like any home, it nurtures and gives us growth in our playing, becoming the best musicians of ourselves.”
This sentiment is echoed by Anneson Neo, flute alumni, who emphasizes the deep friendships that have kept members connected long after graduation.
“The alumni band feels like an extended family of sorts. The friendships and camaraderie formed are so strong that everyone is still willing to travel from all parts of Singapore to Nanyang House for rehearsals after so many years.”
Memories That Last a Lifetime
Among the many unforgettable experiences, NTUSB’s participation in international competitions stands out. Anneson recalls,
“My fondest memory of NTUSB will have to be my trips with the band to WMC 2005 and 2009 under Mr. Luk and Mr. Oura respectively. It was truly an eye-opening experience to compete on an international stage and to hear bands from all over the world perform at the event.”
Such experiences not only shape musicians but also leave a lasting impact on their personal and professional lives.
“I think if not for the opportunities given to me by NTUSB, I wouldn’t be the musician I am right now.”
