What happens when you fuse Teochew opera music with Western classical instruments?

Nam Hwa Opera (NH) and the MacPherson Philharmonic Orchestra (MPPO) invite you on a journey to reimagine traditional Teochew opera music. With a twist.

Using opera favourites that may be familiar to our grandparents and parents, “Reimagining Tradition – Women of Teochew Music” promises an evening of reliving classics through a different lens.

A first in Singapore, “Reimagining Tradition – Women of Teochew Music” features Singapore’s veteran Teochew opera troupe and youngest community orchestra collaborating to present excerpts inspired by the strength and courage of Teochew women.

Be enraptured by the interweaving of different Teochew music styles in “A Teochew’s Journey (潮人旅程 )”. Witness the bravery of “Hua Mulan (花木兰)” and the wit of “Taohua (桃花)”. All in brand new compositions adapted for Teochew music ensemble and Western classical orchestra.

“Reimagining Tradition: Women of Teochew Music” features the musicians of both NH and MPPO. The concert also showcases original compositions by Mr Sulwyn Lok, graduate of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory and recipient of IMDA’s Singapore Digital Scholarship, and Mr Ng Eng Quee, Music Instructor, NH. The concert is conducted by Mr Lester Kong, Music Director of MPPO and winner of the Smoky Mountain Conducting Competition.
