A school may participate in up to two sub-categories, and up to one entry per sub-category.
Programming
All bands in the Band (Concert) category will perform the following in ANY order:
- Set piece
- Choice piece
All bands in Band (Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble or Woodwind Ensemble) will perform two contrasting choice pieces (e.g. traditional/folk pieces vs. contemporary compositions, or pieces from differing musical styles), and may perform without conductors.
A student representative from the band must be nominated to introduce the pieces presented. Schools may nominate up to 2 representatives for this segment. This introduction must be kept under one minute, and should include the following:
- Name of school
- Name of conductor (where applicable)
- Titles and composers/arrangers of all pieces presented
- Students’ key musical learning through the preparation process and highlights of the pieces they will be performing
This introduction will not be assessed by the adjudicators.
Set Pieces – Band (Concert)
Secondary School Level:
Festival on Earth by Lee Jin Jun
JC/CI Level:
Party in Space by Lee Jin Jun
Please e-mail the composer at leejinjun.music@gmail.com if there are queries regarding the purchase of the set piece.
Choice Piece(s)
Five sets of conductor scores for the choice piece(s) must be submitted at the registration desk at the AP venue on the day of AP concerned. These scores will be returned at the end of each AP session. Uncollected scores will be duly destroyed at end of each day.
In compliance with Intellectual Property law, specifically copyright, schools must obtain written approval from the original composer and arranger (for arranged works) and/or publisher before making any modifications to the choice piece(s) (including changing of key, rearrangements, truncating, etc.). The Principal’s Endorsement Form (Annex D2) must be uploaded onto the SYF Portal upon registration. This form is retrievable from the information pack downloadable here.
As the organiser obtains a public performance right permit for the SYF, participating schools need not obtain separate individual permits from COMPASS for their SYF performances for unmodified published music works.
For Band (Concert)
- Bands may not present the same choice piece performed at the SYF 2017 AP for Band.
- Electric guitars, electric pianos, synthesisers, organs and all other electronic devices are not allowed.
For Band (Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble)
- Playing in unison is discouraged. Solo performances with accompaniment are not allowed.
- Electric guitars, electric pianos, synthesisers, organs and all other electronic devices are not allowed.
Provided Instruments
Standard percussion instruments will be provided for the Band (Concert) and Band (Percussion Ensemble) sub-categories.
For Band (Concert, Brass Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble)
- Schools must adhere to the fixed seating plans provided on the SYF portal. Preset chairs and music stands may not be moved during the AP.
For Band (Percussion Ensemble)
- All percussion instruments will be pushed to the back of the stage, as shown in the stage plan provided on the SYF portal. These instruments may be moved at the start of each performance but must be restored to their original positions at the end of the performance.
Duration
- Secondary School Level – Band (Concert): Duration of Choice Piece no more than 8 minutes
- JC/CI Level – Band (Concert): Duration of Choice Piece no more than 10 minutes
- Secondary School and JC/CI Levels – Band (Ensembles): Total performance of 2 Choice Pieces no more than 10 minutes
Performance duration refers to the duration of the performance of the two pieces only. The performance duration will be timed from the first performance note sounded, to the last performance note. It does not include entrance, exit, tuning and transition time between pieces.
Five marks will be deducted for any performance exceeding the stipulated. Mark deductions may result in a change in certification.
Participants
Schools must observe the following number of participants for each sub-category:
- 24 to 80 current students for Band (Concert)
- 8 to 24 current students for Band (Ensemble)
To support schools with small enrolment and encourage more student participation in schools with large CCA numbers, schools can participate with fewer or more students than the recommended participation number.
Bands that involve performers who are not current students of the school will be disqualified.
All performers, including percussionists, must remain on stage for the duration of the performance.
Each student may participate in more than one SYF AP category and sub-category.
Schools must adhere to the reporting time allocated to them for the SYF AP as this will affect the performance schedules of other schools involved. Five marks will be deducted for schools that report late. The reporting time refers to the time that the school is to report at the SYF AP venue. It is not the actual performance time. Mark deductions may result in a change in certification.
IP schools may submit one entry for the Secondary School level, and one entry for the JC/CI level.
- Years 1-4 (Equivalent to Sec 1-4): Eligible for Secondary School Level
- Years 5-6 (Equivalent to JC 1-2): Eligible for JC/CI Level
Students in Years 1-4 are not eligible to participate at the JC/CI level and students in Years 5-6 are not eligible to participate at the Secondary School level.
